CCN, Pandeglang, October 18, 2025 — The Pandeglang Cultural Hall became the venue for the Collaborative Wayang Performance titled “Oemoen with Sepoetjoek Soeratnja”, a presentation that blends puppetry, scriptwriting, and local historical narration within a contemporary performance format.
Organized by Wayang Nganjor Indonesia, the performance features a storyline adapted from the readings of the Babad Banten manuscript. Through a reinterpretation of this classical text, Wayang Nganjor Indonesia seeks to revive the spirit and historical values of Banten in a new form that resonates with today’s audience.
This performance is a continuation of the Scriptwriting Workshop for Puppetry Plays held on September 27–29, 2025, under the theme “Translating Babad Banten: from palm leaves to screen, from oral tradition to stage.” The workshop served as a creative space for writers and artists to transform traditional texts into living, communicative stage performances.
Supported by the Language Agency of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the performance is not only an artistic endeavor but also part of a broader effort to preserve and promote regional languages and literature through the medium of performing arts. This cross-disciplinary collaboration demonstrates that cultural legacies such as Babad Banten can be revitalized through innovative, critical, and contextually relevant interpretations.
“This performance serves as a bridge between text and stage, between the past and the present. Through the process of adaptation, we aim to show that tradition can remain alive when it is given space to be read and reinterpreted,” said Tirta Nugraha Pratama, Head of Wayang Nganjor Indonesia and director of the performance.
The event received an enthusiastic response from the public, the arts community, and cultural practitioners of Banten. It reaffirmed a shared commitment to continuously bring forward art activities rooted in local cultural literacy into public spaces. (***)
