CCN, Cilegon, July 9, 2024 – At the official residence of the Mayor of Cilegon, the commemoration event of the Haul Syuhada Pejuang Geger Cilegon 1888 took place solemnly. Attended by various community leaders, religious figures, and city officials, the event marked an important moment to honor the fallen heroes of the Geger Cilegon 1888 incident.
H.Asep Sofwatulloh, Chairman of the Committee and also Chairman of the KH. Wasyid Foundation conveyed his message during his address, “Tonight, we gather to pray together in remembrance of the event that profoundly shook the world, the Geger Cilegon. This event holds great significance for us as the next generation. The vision and mission of KH. Wasyid, to elevate the creed of tauhid, foster solidarity, and defend the oppressed, remain highly relevant for us to uphold until today.”
The evening event received full support from Mayor of Cilegon, Helldy Agustian. In his speech, he expressed his respect for the Geger Cilegon fighters and emphasized the importance of preserving their spirit of struggle. “The Geger Cilegon fighters indirectly contributed to Indonesia’s independence. Their spirit must be embedded within the governance of Cilegon. We are committed to continuing their struggle and preserving the Islamic culture they have bestowed.”
The Mayor also announced that the city government has planned the construction of the Geger Cilegon Museum this year as a tribute to the heroes. Additionally, monuments and memorials commemorating the Geger Cilegon war will be erected at strategic and historical locations.
H. Nawawi Sahim, Chairman of the Forum for Communication of Religious and Community Figures of Cilegon, also expressed gratitude to the Mayor for his full support of the commemoration. “Since 2013, we have been advocating for the commemoration of Geger Cilegon without support from anyone, and Alhamdulillah, since 2021, the Mayor has appreciated all our efforts. We hope that this commemoration will continue and provide proper homage to the heroes.”
The event concluded with a collective prayer led by KH. Muktilah. Attendees mentioned the names of their ancestors in the prayer, invoking blessings upon all ancestors involved in the Geger Cilegon incident.
