CCN, Cilegon, August 8, 2024 – A total of 35 participants attended a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in Cilegon, marking a significant step towards exploring, preserving, and utilizing ancient manuscripts as invaluable cultural heritage. The primary focus of this discussion was on the ancient manuscripts found in Banten Province, particularly in the City of Cilegon, with the goal of documenting and safeguarding these historical artifacts.

This event, organized by the Cilegon City Library and Archives Office, was designed to ensure that the existing ancient manuscripts are accurately identified, thoroughly documented, and effectively preserved. “These ancient manuscripts are not only a source of pride but also an invaluable cultural heritage,” said H. Ismatullah, Head of the Cilegon City Library and Archives Office. He also emphasized that the preservation of these manuscripts aligns with the 2024 strategic plan of the Cilegon City Library and Archives Office.

During the discussion, Saiful Iskandar, a young historian from Cidunak-Cilegon, highlighted the importance of ancient manuscripts as key sources of information on various aspects of past life, including politics, economics, society, and culture. “Ancient manuscripts provide deep insights into the civilization and history of our society,” Saiful remarked.

Additionally, Saiful explained that Banten was historically one of the largest centers of Islamic civilization in the Nusantara. The intellectual tradition that flourished in Banten has produced numerous significant manuscripts, which are now a primary focus of preservation efforts.

The discussion also addressed the factors influencing the dissemination of manuscripts in Banten, including the role of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in the area in maintaining the writing tradition. “The pesantren tradition in Banten has played a crucial role in the dissemination and preservation of ancient manuscripts, which have now become an integral part of our intellectual heritage,” he added.

The FGD participants expressed hope that the outcomes of this discussion would lay the groundwork for the next steps, such as mapping and preserving the ancient manuscripts in the City of Cilegon. “We hope that all sectors of society will actively participate in this preservation effort, contributing to the advancement and pride of our city,” concluded H. Ismatullah.

With the organization of this FGD, the Cilegon City Library and Archives Office reaffirms its commitment to continuing efforts to preserve ancient manuscripts while uncovering hidden historical potentials in Banten, particularly in Cilegon, to enrich the nation’s cultural and intellectual heritage.
