CCN, CILEGON — Community leader and former Mayor of Cilegon for the 2010–2015 term, Tubagus Iman Ariyadi, has expressed his strong appreciation for the planned inauguration of the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (SMSI) Monument in Cilegon.
According to Tubagus Iman, the monument is not merely a physical symbol, but a testament to the long historical journey of local journalism, initiated with strong idealism by Girdhaus, Chairman of SMSI Cilegon.
“I believe this idea has gone through a long journey. Its history has been documented and will continue to be passed on to young journalists,” he said.
Tubagus Iman emphasized that he has witnessed firsthand how Girdhaus has, from the very beginning, incorporated local wisdom and a strong sense of nationalism in building SMSI.
“I am a witness to this history. There is nothing I would dispute about this achievement. It is truly something to be proud of,” he stated.
The Press as a Counterbalance to Power
In his reflection, Tubagus Iman underlined the vital role of the media as a guardian of idealism and a watchdog over power.
“The press represents idealism. When those in power go astray, they must be criticized in a healthy manner. Objective media serve as a balance between the interests of power and the needs of the public,” he stressed.
He also noted that the challenges facing journalism today are becoming increasingly complex, particularly with the rise of misinformation and the phenomenon of so-called “social media journalists” emerging on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“Amid the spread of hoaxes, professional journalism must continue to stand as a pillar of public education,” he added.
Cilegon’s Continued Growth
Tubagus Iman also recalled the early days of Cilegon’s development, when government facilities were still very limited.
“In the past, even the DPRD office was located in an official residence. Today, however, Cilegon stands on equal footing — it has a public square, impressive government offices, and a solid DPRD building,” he remarked.
He described the development of public open spaces, such as Cilegon’s town square, as a significant milestone in the city’s development history.
Appreciation for SMSI and Young Journalists
Tubagus Iman expressed hope that the SMSI Monument would serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the younger generation, particularly journalists, to continue upholding the dignity of a healthy and ethical press.
“This is a tribute to the struggle of the press in Cilegon. May it become a new historical milestone,” he concluded.
