CCN, Serang-Giri Muda Ubrug Studio in Cikeusal District, Serang Regency, organized a Collaborative Performance between two regional Indonesian arts, namely Lenong (Jakarta) and Ubrug (Banten), called “NONGBRUG.” This performance took place on August 17, 2024, at the KPRI Building in Cikeusal District, Serang Regency, Banten.

The “NONGBRUG” performance, or the collaboration between Lenong and Ubrug, represents a theatrical concept that “marries” two different cultures—Betawi culture from Jakarta, represented by Lenong, and Sundanese culture from Banten, represented by Ubrug. These two cultural traditions are blended into a collaborative performance full of humor. In addition to humor, elements of dance and captivating music make the show even more unique.

The theme of this performance addresses contemporary societal issues, such as mutual suspicion, slander, and self-aggrandizement, which are particularly relevant amid the current flurry of the 2024 regional election contestations. The numerous billboards displayed in public spaces seem to depict people “strategizing and maneuvering” to win the hearts of the public.

This event was made possible by the support of the Cultural Advancement Facilitation Program from the Cultural Heritage Preservation Center (BPK) of Region VIII.

“The purpose of this performance is part of the creative process of the Giri Muda Ubrug Studio in Cikeusal, Serang Regency, as well as a manifestation of preserving and maintaining Ubrug and Lenong arts so that they can survive in an era increasingly influenced by foreign cultures impacting our society’s mindset,” said Abah Undi, the head of the Giri Muda Ubrug Studio in Cikeusal, Serang Regency.

“The performance was engaging, creative, and educational. We hope this creativity can inspire other artists to be even more productive in the future. BPK Region VIII will certainly continue to support the creativity of artists and cultural practitioners in the continuous advancement of culture,” said Mr. Rico, a representative from BPK Region VIII who also attended the event.

The performance also featured the renowned Betawi Lenong artist Bang Kimung, the Young Master from the Sanggar Lenong Pusaka Joglo in Jakarta.(Ahdi)
